Have you ever tried to lose weight with a diet programme? They offer all kinds of things, and you’ll see all the ‘success’ stories of people who’ve dropped huge amounts of weight on them. However, that isn’t the whole story. If you’ve never had any success on regular diets, that’s because they just don’t work. Why don’t they work, and what should you do instead?

How The Diet Industry Misleads You

The important thing to know here is that the diet industry is indeed an industry. You’ll see so many people selling diet plans, books, shows and more. They know that people are always looking for ways to maintain a healthier weight, and so they’ll flock to anyone who offers a solution.

These diets are sold on the fact that they ‘work’, but consider this: if they really did, then the number of people being overweight would decrease over time. In fact, the number of people considered ‘obese’ in the UK alone has quadrupled in the last few years.

Instead, what happens is that people lose weight through the diet, but when they reach their ideal weight they stop the diet, and the weight comes back on. That makes more money for the diet industry, as the person will come back, and spend more, in order to lose the weight again.

Diets Focus On Restrictions

Think about any diet that you’ve been on in the past. Chances are, the diet was characterised by restrictions that you had to place on yourself. Very quickly, your vocabulary will be full of phrases like ‘I can’t’, ‘I shouldn’t’, ‘no cheating’ and more. You’re set up for failure because the moment you eat a ‘forbidden’ food, you’ve ‘failed’ at your diet and will have to start all over again.

As you’re being so heavily restricted, it’s easy to ‘slip up’ and not stick to the diet. It makes you feel worse about yourself, and you can easily slip into shame as you still attempt to lose weight.

Weight Loss Comes Too Quickly

Any diet that claims its successful will show people who did it, and dropped huge amounts of weight. As a potential dieter, you want results, and quickly. A fad diet will give you that, but that weight loss won’t be permanent.

As you follow a diet, you’re sticking to a hugely regimented programme. As soon as you stop, that weight will come back on. Then, you’ll go back to the diet company to lose it again. That weight loss has come too quickly because you haven’t focused on making lifelong lifestyle changes. Instead, you just focused on dropping the weight.

Plus, it’s very unhealthy to keep yo yo dieting in this way. Fad diets put your body under a lot of stress, and it’s much unhealthier in the long run.

Habits Can’t Be Kept Up Long Term

Let’s consider the idea that you’ll put weight back on when you come off a diet. In many diets, that’s sold as a failure on your part. However, that’s actually a failing of the diet itself. It simple cannot be kept up long term, so you’ll struggle to stay on top of your weight once you come off it.

Most diets will be highly restrictive and require a huge amount of planning. In real life, you can’t plan your meals like this. Sometimes you’ll have special events, or simply just want to enjoy a treat or two. Plus, you just won’t have the time to be planning out meals or counting calories. A fad diet does not allow for real life to get in the way.
